Historic Royal Hotel 1849

Note of historical fact.

Built for Henry Hart, this building is one of the oldest continuously licensed hotels in Yass.  The two-storey building originally had thirteen bedrooms and five parlours.  By 1857 it had an impressive ballroom, billiard room and large stables.  In 1858 the first telegraph to Yass was received in an upstairs room.

The Mystery of the Key

This room key from the Royal Hotel was found lying on a road in the town of Amity in Oregon in the United States of America.  How it came to be there is unknown.  The style of the key appears to date from the period before the hotel was modernised in the late 1940’s.  If only this Key could talk!

The key was returned to the Royal Hotel in 2011.
